Senate resolution designates Thursday as "Military Kids Day"

May 14 2008 12:36 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A Senate measure cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., honors the children of military service members by designating Thursday, May 15 as “Military Kids Day,” according to a news release.

Domenici said he cosponsored the Senate resolution to honor the sacrifices made by the children of members of the American Armed Forces.

“Our men and women in uniform continue to bravely answer the call to service in the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Domenici said. “Without a doubt, the children of these brave service members are affected when they are deployed abroad. This resolution is one way the Senate can salute them for the unwavering support they give their parents as they serve our nation.”

The Senate resolution states that it “recognizes the significance of sacrifices made every day by the thousands of families across the

country and the world in support of members of the Armed Forces of the United States.”

The resolution also expresses the U.S. Senate’s gratitude to the children of military service members for “their fortitude, their strength, their compassion and their expertise.”

The measure was authored by U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., who was working to have the resolution accepted by unanimous consent in the Senate on Wednesday, the news release said.

Domenici said the resolution also will call attention to the children whose essays were selected through an Armed Services YMCA essay contest for publication in “My Hero: Military Kids Write About Their Moms and Dads.”

The Armed Services YMCA is a nonprofit organization, affiliated with the national YMCA, which works closely with the U.S. Defense Department to support military families and their children, according to the news release.
