Place: Blackwater Draw Museum and Archaeological Site
Location: The Blackwater Draw Museum is located on U.S. 70 between Clovis and Portales. The Blackwater Draw Archaeological dig site is located 5 miles north of Portales on N.M. 467.
What activities are available here? The dig site has hiking trails that will allow visitors to witness evidence of the Folsom, Paleoindian and Archaic cultures. The museum houses many artifacts such as tools and weapons that have been recovered at the dig site. The museum also has a “touch and feel” table for children and areas designated for RV parking.
What ages is this facility suited for? Both sites can be enjoyed by any age group.
What are admission prices? The admission fees can be paid at either the museum or dig site and will allow entrance to both sites as long as visitors keep the receipt. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors age 60 and up, and $1 for students and children ages 6 to 15. Children under 5 can enter both sites for free.
What are the hours of operation? Hours of operation vary by season. Currently the hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Are there any special events coming up? In October, the facility hosts an archeological day.
One special thing people can do or see here: Visitors can view 12,000-year-old bones of animals that the area natives hunted and killed.
