Curry County fair bringing array of events

Ten things you should know about the 2008 Curry County Fair:

1. It starts Monday and lasts until Saturday.

2. The fair will have 26 carnival rides and 22 carnival games. Carnival crews will set up the booths and rides on Monday, according to Fairgrounds Manager Susan Ferrell. She said the rides will be available on Tuesday.

3. Animals include rabbits, turtles, lambs, sheep, goats, horses, swine, steer and heifers.

4. Ferrell said the Junior Livestock Show is expected to have 174 exhibitors, who will bring 428 animals including, pigs, lamb, heifers, steers and goats.

5. A total of $1,000 will be awarded at the Great American Turtle Race on Saturday. First prize is $300. Only southwest box turtles are allowed to race.

6. Entertainment in the midway includes a roaming puppet show and a chain saw artist. Chain saw artist Gary Keenan will auction his work at the end of the fair.

7. The demolition derby takes place on Thursday. Up to 40 cars are permitted to participate, according to the County Fair Book.

8. Food vendors number 26 and includes fair food such as funnel cakes, turkey legs, corn dogs and cotton candy, according to Ferrell. She said one vendor will serve Italian food such as meatball sandwiches and spaghetti.

9. The fair will have eight concerts during the week, including the L.A. Party Dolls, Whiskey Rebellion and Los Texmaniacs.

10. One building is air-conditioned at the fair this year: The indoor pavilion. The pavilion will house the pioneer exhibits, including a train display.
